West End Square

West End Square is the first neighborhood park in Dallas’s West End Historic District, transforming a former surface parking lot into a vibrant public space. Designed by James Corner Field Operations for the Downtown Dallas Parks Conservancy, the park brings much-needed green infrastructure to the heart of downtown. JBC played a key role on the design team, responsible for irrigation, soils, and subdrainage design—essential components for sustaining the landscape in a challenging urban environment.

JBC’s technical expertise was critical in addressing the site’s constraints, including dense underground utilities, limited space for soil depth, and minimal site slope. The team developed a custom soil design that increased root volume beneath paved areas while avoiding utility conflicts. They also designed a subdrainage system to manage stormwater despite the flat topography. Importantly, JBC’s irrigation design ensured the plantings could thrive in the heat of downtown Dallas, making the park’s long-term success possible.
