Purgatory Creek Soils Assessment

The Purgatory Creek Soils Assessment in San Marcos, Texas, was part of a larger flood mitigation and creek restoration project led by Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN). JBC was engaged to provide technical expertise in soils design, and tasked with assessing existing conditions. That led to development of recommendations for how soils could be amended to function as both a stable substrate for development and a supportive foundation for new plant life along the corridor.

The project presented multiple challenges, including frequent flooding and the need to widen the creek to manage higher stormwater volumes. JBC developed a detailed soils plan that outlined how materials should be stripped, stockpiled, amended, and redistributed across the site during construction. This work provided the design team and contractors with a practical, science-based roadmap to guide implementation, ensuring the soils would perform successfully in supporting both hydrologic and ecological goals for the reimagined creek corridor.
