University of Notre Dame Athletic Quad

South Bend, Indiana

As part of the University of Notre Dame's $100 million Athletic Master Plan, JBC Landscape Architects (JBC) served as the athletic surface consultant for the Athletic Quad project, an ambitious initiative unprecedented in scope for the University. The project includes a lacrosse stadium, a soccer stadium, a track venue, and three football practice fields. JBC provided design and construction guidance for both synthetic and natural turf surfaces, working closely with Ratio Architects and Barge Cauthen & Associates.

Arlotta Stadium, the 3,000-seat lacrosse facility, features a lighted artificial turf field with locker rooms, restrooms, and concession areas for men’s and women’s competition. Adjacent to the lacrosse stadium, two synthetic football practice fields and one natural turf practice field were constructed, along with reconfiguration of existing practice fields.

The new 6,000-seat soccer stadium includes a natural grass field built with a USGA soil profile to support intensive seasonal use. A “broken back” track with a natural turf infield replaced the former track, further enhancing the functionality of the Athletic Quad. JBC oversaw all athletic surfaces to ensure long-term performance, playability, and alignment with Notre Dame’s athletic vision.
