Metropolitan Park

Metropolitan Park and the Amazon HQ2 office towers have reshaped the heart of Arlington, Virginia with a first phase of development that blends workplace with community space. JBC partnered with James Corner Field Operations (JCFO) to design and implement key site elements, including the building terraces, park landscapes, and streetscape renovations. The result is a dynamic public space that balances community needs with the functionality of a corporate campus.

The park features a playground, open lawn, and winding paths set among a diverse tree and planting palette. Visitors can enjoy views from a scenic overlook of the park, dog runs, and winding pathways. While the above-ground amenities are striking, much of JBC’s work lies beneath the surface. Our team developed soil profiles that support sustainable plant growth while accounting for drainage, reclaimed-water irrigation, and the structural limits of the underground parking garages below.

Throughout construction, JBC provided ongoing review and problem-solving to address unexpected conditions, coordinate with multiple stakeholders, and ensure successful installation. This collaborative approach helped deliver a high-quality landscape that now supports community events, exercise classes, and a weekly farmers market. JBC is proud to have contributed expertise in green infrastructure such as soils, subdrainage, and irrigation design to this landmark project alongside JCFO and a talented team of partners.
