Macombs Dam Park at Yankee Stadium
Built adjacent to the former site of “The House That Ruth Built,” this park was developed to replace and enhance the green space lost during construction of the new Yankee Stadium. The City of New York committed to restoring not only the amount of parkland displaced but also to improving the quality of community resources available to neighborhood residents.
Located atop a two-story parking structure, the 3.25-acre park features a 400-meter running track surrounding an all-weather synthetic turf soccer field, as well as basketball and handball courts, exercise equipment, landscaped berms, and built-in spectator seating. A modern comfort station and accessible recreation areas for adults and children further contribute to the park’s role as a vibrant community hub. The $35 million project formed part of the $195 million Yankee Stadium Redevelopment effort, which sought to reinvest in the South Bronx neighborhood.
JBC Landscape Architects served as a key member of the design-build team, responsible for preparing detailed construction documents to address the complex requirements of a rooftop park. The team carefully coordinated drainage, irrigation, and structural systems to accommodate heavy loads, extensive paving, and large athletic surfaces, ultimately delivering a dynamic recreational space that balances engineering precision with community connection.
