Alex Box Stadium - Louisiana State University
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Alex Box Stadium at Louisiana State University represents a premier Division I collegiate baseball venue, expanding upon the legacy of the original 5,500-seat facility with a new 9,500-seat stadium designed to enhance both athlete performance and spectator experience. JBC Landscape Architects provided comprehensive landscape architectural services for all elements within the stadium field wall, focusing on precision engineering of the sports field to meet NCAA standards and LSU’s high-performance expectations. Design responsibilities included subgrade preparation, sub-drainage systems, irrigation design, agronomic soil development, grading, and product specification for every component of the field system.
Throughout construction, the project faced extreme weather challenges as two hurricanes brought more than ten inches of rain and widespread debris across the site. These unexpected conditions disrupted the construction schedule, delaying the installation of the playing surface by a full month and pushing sod placement into mid-October. In response, JBC modified its fertilization and establishment program to accelerate root growth in cooler temperatures. The adapted approach proved highly effective, achieving an impressive fourteen inches of turf root depth in just fourteen days.
The result is a resilient, high-performance natural turf surface that stands as the centerpiece of LSU’s celebrated baseball program. JBC’s technical expertise and adaptive design solutions ensured that the Alex Box Stadium field would perform at championship level from its inaugural season onward.
