Memorial Stadium Green Roof - Manhattan, Kansas

As the emerging technology of green roofs moves into the region of the lower midwest, Kansas State University (KSU) has embarked on the idea that this concept, implementation and monitoring could be something that could push KSU to the next level of environmental education and awareness with the focus on sustainable design in new and renovated construction projects on campus.

Along with Gould Evans Associates, on the West side, and Ebert Mayo Architects, on the East side, Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company provided conceptual design, construction documentation and construction administration of a green roof on both the West and East sides of existing Memorial Stadium.  During this process, multiple concept designs were presented to various departments and individuals within KSU to inform the end users of the concept of having a green roof and its benefits to the project.

The implementation of the Memorial Stadium Green Roof by Kansas State University is an icon for the University and the State of Kansas. The prominent location of the Green Roof, situated adjacent to the Alumni Center, as well as its accessibility to the public, will allow it to serve as a constant reminder that Kansas State University is a leader in environmental research, development and outreach.

JBC served as the lead green roof design consultant for the projects.  Our scope included planting design, irrigation design, engineered lightweight soil design, slope stabilization and substrate design to the waterproofing of the existing concrete deck, or in this case, the existing stair and riser system.
