Kauffman Foundation at Legacy Park

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation engaged JBC Landscape Architects (JBC) to lead the site design and development of the 20-acre campus surrounding its headquarters in midtown Kansas City. The landscape was envisioned not only as a functional framework for stormwater management but also as a dynamic and inspiring setting for employees and visitors.

Two large ponds, ringed with native limestone and planted with wetlands vegetation, provide natural stormwater detention while enhancing views from offices and common spaces. The ponds are connected by waterfalls framed with native plantings, creating a striking focal point visible from multiple vantage points. Bridges spanning the waterfalls add to the sense of enclosure and create an engaging courtyard space nestled between the building’s wings. Designed with colorful seasonal plantings, turfgrass gathering areas, and bluestone paving, this courtyard serves as a welcoming place for employees to gather for informal meetings, luncheons, and special events.

Throughout the site, JBC introduced plantings that complement the existing vegetation with a diverse palette of native and ornamental species. Layers of overstory and understory trees, shrubs, and groundcovers provide year-round interest, frame important views, and seamlessly connect outdoor spaces across the property. The result is a thoughtfully designed landscape that reflects the Foundation’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community while establishing a vibrant and enduring campus environment.
