Kansas City Zoo Elephant Exhibit

JBC supported the Kansas City Zoo Elephant Exhibit project by designing landscapes for spectator circulation and social gathering areas, including pavement layout, soils, irrigation, and site furnishings. The project emphasized optimal views, efficient pedestrian and tram circulation, and preservation of heritage trees while creating engaging experiences for visitors.

A unique aspect of the project that leaned heavily on JBC's expertise in soil design was incorporating elephant manure into the soil profile as an organic amendment. Repeated soil testing helped balance nutrient levels, supporting thriving plants during the first growing season and saving the zoo money on compost. Construction coordination was challenging, as the zoo remained open, but JBC planned temporary circulation paths to ensure safe access and optimal exhibit views throughout.

The result is a functional, sustainable, and visitor-friendly landscape, with positive feedback from guests praising the thoughtfully designed viewpoints, social spaces, and overall flow of the exhibit.
