Community Visioning - Villisca, IA

JBC Landscape Architects (JBC) partnered with the community of Villisca, Iowa, through the Community Visioning Program to create a framework plan and implementation strategy that highlighted the town’s natural, cultural, and visual resources. With a rich history and a strong sense of identity, Villisca sought to improve safety, accessibility, and community amenities while celebrating its heritage.

The plan emphasized welcoming entry signage, downtown streetscape and sidewalk enhancements, and improved pedestrian connections throughout the community. Trail development was a major priority, linking Villisca to nearby Viking Lake State Park and Hacklebarney Woods County Park, while also creating safe routes within the city itself. Additional amenities such as a frisbee golf course, an upgraded high school courtyard, and a trailhead information facility were proposed to expand recreation and showcase cultural assets.

JBC’s technical expertise in circulation, site planning, and design ensured that the improvements were not only functional but also sustainable and reflective of Villisca’s unique character. Together, these strategies created a roadmap for strengthening Villisca’s quality of life while honoring its story and supporting future growth.
