Community Visioning - Corning, IA

JBC Landscape Architects guided Corning through a community visioning process focused on improving transportation corridors, enhancing pedestrian and recreational connectivity, and reinforcing community identity. Working with Trees Forever field staff and Iowa State University partners, the team engaged residents and stakeholders through surveys, focus groups, and assessments of circulation patterns, sidewalks, parks, and other community assets. This process helped clarify how people move through Corning and where improvements could strengthen safety, accessibility, and local character.

The steering committee identified several key priorities: enhancing circulation and sidewalks, establishing a connected trail system, improving pedestrian crossings and traffic calming, and developing cohesive wayfinding and signage to support a unified community identity. These goals guided a set of concept plans addressing trail connections, park enhancements, sidewalk safety, downtown improvements, and coordinated signage strategies.

The resulting vision provides Corning with a clear, actionable roadmap for long-term improvements. Presentation boards documented the proposed concepts in detail, giving the community a practical guide for strengthening connectivity, supporting recreational access, enhancing downtown streetscapes, and fostering a strong sense of place.
