Hummer Sports Park
Topeka, Kansas
JBC Landscape Architects conducted a comprehensive analysis for the Topeka Unified School District 501 to guide the replacement of synthetic turf at Hummer Sports Park, one of the state’s premier high school athletic venues. A primary challenge of the project was preserving and repairing the 12-year-old resilient shock pad during demolition and installation of the new surface, ensuring the field maintained its high-performance qualities for athletes. JBC provided oversight and quality control throughout the installation process, including evaluation of base preparation, infill distribution, and G-Max testing to verify safety and performance standards.
The replacement included both the football and soccer fields, which have hosted numerous Kansas State High School Activities Association state championship competitions across multiple sports. Emphasizing sustainability, the school district recycled all salvaged infill materials and repurposed sections of the old turf for uses such as batting cages, minimizing environmental impacts while extending the lifecycle of the original materials. JBC also provided recommendations for long-term maintenance practices to ensure the fields remain safe, playable, and durable for years to come.
The project delivered a safe, durable, and environmentally responsible playing surface that supports the continued use of Hummer Sports Park as a premier venue for high school athletics, while reflecting the school district’s commitment to both performance and sustainability.
