JBC Landscape Architects (JBC) was part of the redevelopment of Homewood Park and Willie Stargell Field, a multi-million-dollar community revitalization effort led by design firm Studio Zewde and the City of Pittsburgh. The project transforms a historic 5-acre park into a modern, state-of-the-art athletic and recreational hub that better serves local youth organizations and expands green space while connecting with the surrounding neighborhood. JBC provided the core green infrastructure and athletic field design required to bring this community destination to life.
To ensure long-term performance and durability across the 5-acre site, JBC provided specialized athletic field design within tight space constraints, prepared agronomic soil specifications, designed the subdrainage system, and a provided a comprehensive irrigation strategy.
Beneath the plaza's hardscape, JBC implemented structural soils to provide expansive, uncompacted root space, which was paired with specialized soils to promote long-term tree establishment. The advanced subsurface drainage system is capable of rapidly evacuating excess stormwater to allow the field to withstand heavy multi-sport foot traffic. This is paired with an efficient irrigation system designed to balance vegetative health with water conservation.
By integrating elite sports turf infrastructure with resilient soil, irrigation, and water management systems, JBC Landscape Architects helped establish a highly functional and enduring community space for the Pittsburgh community.
