Carolina Panthers Stadium and Practice Field
Charlotte, North Carolina
Located in an urban downtown site and seamlessly integrated with Charlotte’s existing street grid, the Carolina Panthers Stadium has become a landmark of both athletic and civic significance. JBC Landscape Architects designed the state-of-the-art hybrid Bermuda grass playing surface for the stadium, as well as the adjacent practice facility, which includes two additional hybrid Bermuda fields. The stadium field was engineered to accommodate regulation-size soccer alongside NFL football, providing versatility for a range of athletic events.
JBC’s scope encompassed irrigation engineering, drainage, and growing media design for the full 33-acre stadium and practice facility site. The design required exceptional agronomic performance and wear tolerance to support frequent use while maintaining the visual and functional integrity of the playing surfaces.
The stadium concept, known as the “stadium in the park,” departs from traditional designs that are typically surrounded by expanses of impervious parking. Instead, JBC helped create a green, urban park environment enveloping the stadium. This approach enhances the aesthetic and environmental quality of the site while promoting sustainability and public accessibility.
Through innovative design and careful integration of landscape and turf science, JBC delivered playing surfaces and surrounding landscapes that set a standard for stadium design by combining high performance, durability, and the welcoming feel of a contemporary urban park.
