Community Visioning - Onawa, IA

In 2015 JBC began working with the Community of Onawa through the Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning Program. JBC worked with Iowa State University, the Iowa Department of Transportation, and Onawa Community Members on a 6-month-long process of community stakeholder input, data gathering, and steering committee meetings. JBC guided the community’s vision for transportation enhancements based on documented barriers, assets, and cultural and historic places. As the design concepts were developed, JBC educated the community on the importance of “complete streets” design concepts and integrated green infrastructure.

In 2016 JBC was engaged by the City of Onawa in 2016 to provide comprehensive Master Planning Services for the development of a new park at the old Central Elementary School site. The master plan maximizes the potential recreation space with programmed uses to provide comfortable and safe environment for park users.

In 2017, JBC was hired by the City of Onawa to assist them in a comprehensive way-finding and signage effort. In 2018, JBC continued their involvement and began a comprehensive master planning effort for Downtown Onawa. With one of the widest main streets in the United States, Onawa realizes that they have a great opportunity to reshape their downtown with the implementation of a complete street.
