This week we are delighted to welcome Susan to our team!
Susan is an MLA candidate at Iowa State University. She is exploring the design of experiential trails and greenspaces for the health of people and our planet in her studies and is supporting JBC's work with Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program this summer.
Her background includes Air Force service and project management and market development work in global agricultural finance. Susan is drawn to landscape architecture's ability to connect people to the beauty of our natural heritage.

We recently shared that JBC received an Award of Merit in Planning & Analysis from the Prairie Gateway Chapter of the ASLA (🎉), and today we are providing more information about the project itself.
In our latest blog post, we share some behind-the-scenes insight into JBC's approach to a park master planning project and how we turn existing conditions plus community feedback into a document for future planning.

JBC recently visited Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. We think it is vitally important for all parties involved (the owner, contractor, and design team) that landscape architects to stay involved and get out on-site regularly through the construction of a project.

JBC recently visited Harwood Park in Dallas, TX, where we are glad to be working with @teneyckla to provide specialized design for the soils, subdrainage, and irrigation aspects of the project.
It is always fun to see a project under construction, but we're primarily there to help turn designs into reality by preserving the integrity of the design, protecting the investment made by the owner, and looking for opportunities to solve problems as (or before!) they emerge in the construction phase of a project.
Find out more about what we do when on-site on our latest blog post - link in bio!

As we round out World Landscape Architecture Month this April, we'd like to do a little throwback to recognize the efforts of our namesake, Jeffrey Bruce, in promoting licensure in the State of Missouri.
With the formation of the Missouri Association of Landscape Architects, an effort led by Jeffrey Bruce in Kansas City and Wayne Buggenhagen in St. Louis, landscape architects have a voice in attempts to pass legislation related to landscape architectural licensure. 🎉

At JBC, everyone's design process looks different...and can vary from project to project. Pictured here is a sketch by Rachel as she uses the existing pathway circulation, vegetation and elevation changes on campus to create fluid circulation paths and organized programming for the Northwest Missouri State University union. ✍️

JBC believes that performing construction site observations preserves the integrity of the design, protects the investment made by the Owner, and provides opportunities to solve problems as they emerge in the construction phase of a project.
Read more about how we view and perform site observation visits in our latest blog post - link in bio. ☝️

A couple of weeks ago JBC was on site at Northwest Missouri State University. While at Northwest, we looked at multiple spaces and how we can create a better connection throughout campus.
We are excited to help NWMSU with a new vision for how they can continue to enhance their terrific facilities!

Last Friday, JBC decided to "peace out" a little early and spend some time outside the office enjoying each other's company, food, and a couple of games! Can you guess who got the double-Yahtzee?
It is always nice to take a break after a busy (but fun!) start to the year!

JBC was honored to receive a Merit Award for Planning and Analysis at the Prairie Gateway ASLA Chapter Awards Gala last week!
The Carlson Park Master Plan project in Decorah, Iowa incorporates a variety of activities and elements into Carlson Park, building off the existing trails on the site:
-A new entry drive and parking lot brings visitors into the southwest corner of the park.
-A hub of activity and amenity areas are located adjacent to the parking lot, including a nature playground, restroom, lookout tower and a bicycle skills park and pump track.
-An existing trail loop allows access to multiple trailheads along the main loop with varying skill levels.
-Other elements incorporated into the master plan include an 18-hole disc golf course, remote tent camping sites, and an amphitheater/stage.
This was such a fun project to be a part of! @pgasla

Since it is Thursday, we wanted to throw it back by showcasing Citygarden!
Citygarden is a 2.9-acre public park and sculpture garden occupying two blocks in downtown St. Louis, and is part of the Gateway Mall, a 19-square block spine of green space. Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company worked with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects to provide engineered soil mixes, subsurface drainage, and high performance turf design in an innovative green infrastructure solution that accommodates heavy visitor usage while minimizing investment of maintenance resources.
Two-thirds of the site’s stormwater drainage is managed within the boundaries of the garden. More than 5,000 square feet of rain gardens capture, retain and infiltrate surface water flow. The site has the capacity for a 4” rainfall event without any storm water entering the local sewer system, virtually eliminating runoff. JBC designed three different soil mixes to replace the rubble-filled, over-compacted existing site soils. These soil mixes provide a healthy substrate that is essential for the long-term success of plantings.

This past Tuesday was Landscape Architecture Advocacy Day at the Missouri Capitol in Jefferson City! Members of the St. Louis ASLA chapter and Prairie Gateway ASLA chapter (including JBC's very own Spencer!) had a chance to connect with multiple legislators. More specifically, the team used the day to articulate a landscape architect's role while underscoring the importance of continued licensure within our field. 🎉
We are already looking forward to next year's Advocacy Day!
