Located in one of the most dramatic urban lakefronts in the world, the Chicago Navy Pier has long been a symbol for the city and major attraction for citizens and visitors.
Navy Pier reached its centennial in 2016 and, in its bid to remain a world-class public destination, it has embraced a new vision.
In collaboration with James Corner Field Operations, Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company developed an integrated systems approach for biologically-based planting, soils design, water harvesting and re-use.
JBC’s innovative water management strategy for this Sustainable SITEs certification project integrates best stormwater management practices, collection-harvest-reuse of water in the landscape, “smart” automated irrigation technology, agronomic and microbiological soil design, volumetric soil moisture sensing, and real time evapotranspiration (Eto) rates.
JBC's involvement began in Phase I, a redesign of the Pier's South Dock, and has continued through the completion of Phase 2, Polk Brothers Park.
