National Roadside Vegetation Management Association
Award of Honor
Description
The Kansas City International Airport covers more than 7,000 acres north of the metropolitan area. KCI retained Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company to create master plan objectives for long-term landscape development. JBC created the groundwork for a balance between airport operations, grounds maintenance, public interests, and the natural systems in all future expansion plans.
JBC also performed an extensive analysis of the area’s native prairie diversity along with best strategies for species management. As a result, KCI planted than 1,200 acres of native prairie grasses and wildflowers. The plan reduced grounds maintenance, promoted an ethic of public environmental stewardship, and showcased the beauty of the native prairie ecology to visitors and residents alike.
