Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company Design Philosophy

JBC strives to design outdoor spaces and athletic and recreational facilities that respect their natural surroundings and compliment their built neighbors. The firm's reputation for design excellence and innovation is firmly rooted in a conviction that success grows from a process of interaction with the client. JBC is a collaborative practice. The firm's emphasis on sharing ideas is of great importance in the identification and resolution of design issues. As a result, each project reflects the shared wisdom and ideas of many people and utilizes the talents of the entire professional staff. Consistent with this approach, the firm is not departmentalized; rather it is structured on a project basis, allowing the client to have continuing and consistent communication with the design team. Individuals assigned to a project remain on the project from beginning to end, giving the design team a "project memory" and ensuring that certain ideas and concepts continuously and smoothly grow and develop as the project evolves.

JBC is committed to the intimate involvement of the client in the design of a project, from program development through construction. We believe that each project evolves uniquely from its site and that one's experience while moving through the site and its landscape is extremely important. Since the beginning of the firm in 1986, there has been a strong conviction that designing without direct client and end-user input and then presenting a "finished" product limits the confidence in both process and results. We prefer working directly with our clients during design development and the consideration of alternatives. During this close relationship, ideas are discussed openly, and subsequent steps are decided collectively. The entire design evolves in an orderly manner, one step at a time. Consequently, project elements and relationships work together as a whole resulting in a successful project, one in which the satisfaction of the client, community, and users is achieved.JBC firmly believes quality design can make a distinct difference. There is evidence in both the natural and built environments to suggest that effective design can make a significant difference in the quality of our lives. From the transformation of the grittiest urban centers to the conservation of the grandest expanse of public lands, our design teams have accumulated an unparalleled record of achievement. The power of design to transcend and yet connect seemingly unrelated systems and resources lies at the heart of our combined abilities to leave a sustainable imprint in communities and a lasting legacy for future generations. Many believe that contemporary problems defy solutions and that their complexity breeds immunity to understanding and resolution. JBC is dedicated to the notion that the collaboration of design professionals can result in integrated strategies to solve significant problems. We at JBC hope you share our commitment and excitement for this philosophy.
