When
the new AA Atlantic Coast Baseball League began play in 1999, the feature venue
was the new Somerset Patriots Ballpark. The innovative 6-inch sand profile playing
field was designed by JBC for an extremely challenging site with a demanding
program of use. The playing field, located within the 100-year floodplain, is
programmed to accommodate two separate baseball teams as well as numerous special
events.
The field, which was constructed in two phases, includes a high-capacity subdrainage
system that will shut down during a flood event to prevent stormwater from back
flooding the field.
The stabilized rootzone can drain 22 inches of water per hour while allowing
fully loaded trucks to travel across the field without damaging the turf. Even
the warning track is designed to act as a high-capacity trench drain.
