Valley School District's new $40 million high school includes a comprehensive
athletic field complex. The 62-acre complex contains competition venues for
track, soccer and baseball along with practice fields for soccer, football,
baseball and softball.
The steeply rolling site with a shallow soil profile over native limestone presented
significant design constraints. To mitigate the cost of rock removal, JBC designed
a shallow profile sand-plate reinforced with turf stabilizers. This technology
allowed for a shallower undercut of native bedrock, which lowered costs significantly
and made it possible to install a modified rootzone for all of the fields.
As a result, the School District is able to provide 12 high-performance sand-based
athletic surfaces for a cost comparable to native soil athletic fields.
