Completed
in 1997, this field was converted from artificial turf to Kentucky Bluegrass
sod with a reinforced 10-inch sand/peat blended rootzone.
Fans and players alike have noticed the shallower crown of the new field, as
it is only 8 inches as compared with the 24-inch crown on artificial turf. Although
the crown is less steep, the gravity-based drainage system below the new field
allows for drainage of 15-inches of water per hour. Drainage tiles installed
in a herringbone pattern take water away from the field and empty it to a trench
drain that surrounds the field. A new synthetic track was installed adjacent
to the stadium wall to accommodate traffic and create a more easily maintained
edge.
