JBC developed
a land use program for the Power Plant site at the Columbia campus of the
University of Missouri. The main accomplishment of the plan was the successful
integration of conflicting land uses, such as coal storage and truck loading
and access, with student parking, recreation, pedestrian circulation, and
scenic and open space amenities. The restoration of the once natural appeal
of the site was realized through the identification and preservation of the
site's natural assets and the mitigation of unsightly elements and views.
Natural grade changes, landscaping, and architecturally treated screen walls
were utilized to control views and circulation, reclaim a deteriorated stream
bed from industrial landfill operations, and provide pleasing and functional
pedestrian access of scenic merit to the Campus.
